The benefits of aquatic exercise The properties of water make aquatic exercise a safe, effective exercise option for many people.
The buoyancy of water decreases joint compression forces thus decreasing pain associated with exercise. It provides a safe environment for balance training for those individuals with a high fall risk. The viscosity of the water provides resistance in all movement directions and exercise intensity can be varied easily by increasing surface area or movement speed. The warm water temperature increases circulation, flexibility and promotes relaxation. Many individuals who are unable to exercise on land, find they are able to participate in an aquatic-based program with great success.
